Duraprene: Green design
Performance:
Duraprene is a sustainable, high performance wall
covering. Since its introduction, Duraprene has become
an industry classic. It has become standard in numerous
sustainable design projects.
Features:
• is one of the industry's best replacements for vinyl
available today.
• is made from wood and synthetic latex then sealed
with urethane.
• is chlorine free
• the wood pulp component is comprised of: 50% sustainably
forested wood pulp from Pan European Forest Certified
(PEFC) Swedish forests and Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) certified Canadian forests. 40% recycled post-industrial
waste (recycled cardboard from carton manufacturing)
10% recycled post-consumer waste (recycled office
waste).
• is printed with a variety of different inks, most
of which are water based. Occasionally we use non
water-based inks depending upon the effect requested
by clients.
• the water used to bond the wood pulp and latex together
is re-used at a rate of 84%.
• the amount of energy used in manufacturing is far
less than with conventional wall coverings; there
are far fewer steps involved; it is a continuous process.
Duraprene is a beautiful alternative to PVC wall coverings
and works well for corporate, healthcare and hospitality.
Reliability:
All of our materials are warranted.
Conformance:
The linear yard (based on a 54” width) is the most
widely specified width for wall coverings.
Durability:
Duraprene is made without the use of petrochemicals.
It is a composite of recycled wood pulp and responsibly
forested wood fibers fused with latex. It is pulped
and bonded in latex under high compression then sealed
in a chemical bond with a patented urethane sealant.
The pressurization of the fibers is key to its durability;
the fibers interlock and cannot be torn.
The solutions used in bonding and sealing are water-based,
adding to the products environmental characteristics.
The latex bonding solution is an emulsion of carbon-based
organic chains. It has no chlorine.
Serviceability:
The cleaning and maintenance qualities are superior
to those of vinyl. Powerful cleaning agents can be
used without stripping the color.
Aesthetics:
The product also absorbs inks and surface dyes in
pattering, giving the material deeper saturation than
vinyl. It also responds to inks and surface dyes better
than conventional substrates. Fine art printing techniques
are used to achieve the rich aesthetic.
